business is depended on for profit rather than the individual sales, lower prices can be quoted on high grade standard goods than the less thoroughly equipped competitor can hope to equal. It is to the interest of all prudent provision buyers to patronize this store in preference to others. No shelf worn or out of date goods are allowed to accumulate. The store is well appointed and handsomely arranged, sanitation and cleanliness are essential features with the wishes of the trade in mind at all times. Mr. Will L. Samuel, the live and enterprising proprietor was born in Kentucky in 1871. He received his education in Missouri and is a valued member of the W. O. W., and M. B. A. He is highly esteemed as one of our public spirited and influential business men.
      Away back in 1866, when the commercial prosperity that Nevada enjoys today was not within the dreams of the most optimistic, the above named firm became established in this city by Mr. J. T. Birdseye (now deceased). We can therefore safely say that this firm was the pioneer in this line in this section of the country. Through these years by strict attention to business and superior professional ability the members of this firm have caused this business to grow and prosper until today it is the leading establishment in this city in this line. The business conducted is handling real estate, insurance, negotiating loans, making abstracts, etc., also furnishing council, Mr. H. F. Birdseye being an attorney at law. Farm and city property are for sale or rent. They also make exchanges in this vicinity or almost any other locality, having almost everything in this line listed, or are in a position to obtain same for any prospective customer, Insurance by some of the most reliable old line companies is written. The long years with which this firm has been in existence is ample evidence of its reliability, integrity of

purpose and fair dealings with all. Mr. H. F. Birdseye, the son of the founder is at present the guiding hand of this firm, taking the reins and responsibility of this mammoth business upon the death of his father in 1906. Mr. H. F. Birdseye was born in this city in 1880. He is a graduate of the law department of the State University. He is a valued member of the Elks, K. of P., M. W. A., and highly esteemed by all who know him.
      No finer object lesson in the possibilities of a great enterprise, conducted on sound and conservative principles can be sighted than the Nevada Milling Co. This finely equipped and metropolitanly conducted plant is located at the corner of Colorado and Hickory Streets. The plant is a model of its kind, having mill equipped with all of the latest improved machinery, and a capacity of turning out 400 barrels of flour a day. Elevator with storage capacity of 20,000 bushels of grain, which capacity will in the near future be increased to 50,000 bushels. This mill was established in 1898 and has since that time been supplying the trade in this territory with a superior product. A specialty is made of the following brands of flour: "Perfection," "Lily," "Snowflake," "Royal Bob," "Lightning," and other brands of high grade flour which are manufactrued, these brands having won fame for this mill as well as spreading the name of our city far and near. The magnitude of this business gives employment to fifteen skilled men, while an ample force of road representatives ply the surrounding country in the interests of this firm. These goods are also handled through the jobbing houses. The mill was formerly incorporated, the entire plant being purchased by Mr. N. M. Vilm a short time ago. At present it is operated under his direct supervision. He is a miller of the old school and has won distinction in other localities by improving plants |
and increasing their output as well as the quality of the product. Mr. N. M. Vilm was born in Alsasse Lorraine, Germany. He received a college and technical education in Germany, finishing a business course in the United States. He has been in this country about twenty-nine years, all of which time has been devoted to studying the conditions here as well as being connected with mills in various parts. He was for seven years with the G. H. Dulle Milling Co. at Jefferson City, Mo. Ten years with the Rea-Patterson Milling Co., at Coffeyville, Kansas, Mr. Vilm being a member of this firm. Also three and one-half years with the Billings Milling Co., at Billings, Montana. He is recognized with the most influential and enterprising of our business men.
      Among the important institutions of our city is that conducted by Mr. A. D. Cox and located at 218 North Main Street. The business consists of handling flour, feed, seeds and grains, also stock and poultry food and condition powders. This business was established in 1908 and has grown to large proportions under this management. The entire building, two floors in height, 30x100 feet is occupied, which space is heavily stocked with the goods carried, which are bought in large quantities, taking advantage of discounts and depressions in the market and owing to the volume of business conducted, low prices with quick service and the best goods are afforded all. Three skilled employees are required who courteously cater to the desires of all. Mr. A. D. Cox, the proprietor, was born in this city in 1881, receiving his education here. He has followed this line of business since reaching his majority, and at present enjoys a large trade of which he is very deserving. He is an earnest worker in the Christian church and highly esteemed by all who know him. |
