This heavily stocked provision house is located at 1100 North Ash Street and was established in 1894. The entire building at this location is occupied, two stories in height, 50x70 feet. Staple and fancy, imported and domestic groceries, condiments, table delicacies, the best grades of canned goods and flour are handled. They also carry a large line of fruit, vegetables, produce, etc. Five courteous assistants are required, assuring quick service in both delivering and putting up orders in the store. Mr. W. T. Martin was born in Pike County, Missouri, in 1873. He is a member of the Knights of Father Matthew, Knights of Columbus and C. K. of L. A. Mr. Edward Martin was also born in Pike County, Missouri, in 1875. He is a member of the C. K. of L. A. and Knights of Columbus. Both gentlemen have been in this city since early boyhood, receiving their education in the schools and colleges of Nevada. The studio of Mrs. Whipple at 212 West Cherry Street suggests the true artistic spirit in its equipment and fittings, with spacious reception rooms tapistried and hung with beautiful examples of the photographic art, presents a picture of elegance and invitation to repose, evincing regards for the taste and comfort of the visitors to a degree not elsewhere to be met with in southwestern Missouri. Supplementing which is an operating room complete in every detail of modern equipment and a delight not alone to the artist's eye, but to those entering it for the purpose of perpetrating a likeness of themselves in any style of the art. Mrs. Whipple's long years of experience which have been devoted to this work have made her an adept in the art of posing subjects. important features. This business was established in 1907 and gives employment to two skilled assistants and occupies 1,400 square feet of floor space. Mrs. Whipple was born and raised in Wisconsin. She is an earnest worker in the Christian church. Perhaps the most striking among enterprises in recent years and which tend to disclose the trend of progress in Nevada is that of the provision house located at 630 East Cherry Street. Mr. Mefford established this store in 1906, beginning in a small way, with a small stock of goods. Everything in the line of staple and fancy groceries, flour, tea, coffee, canned goods, cigars and tobacco, bakery products, etc., are handled. Mr. Mefford also operates a |
meat department in connection at this establishment. He handles the best meat to be found in this city most of which is killed under his direct supervision. Mr. J. H. Mefford was born in the northern part of Missouri in 1845. Previous to establishing this store he was engaged in feeding and raising live stock for the market. He is a valued member of the I. O. O. F. Mr. Hackett at 123 South Main Street was established in 1889 and has been recognized as the most expert horseshoer and blacksmith in this section of the country since that time. The shop is thoroughly equipped with appliances and facilities for turning out correct work with two expert assistants in attendance. For horses that are lame, interfere or have diseased feet this shop should execute the work on their feet, as they specialize treating horses so that they may travel easier and all blemishes can heal. Mr. T. E. Hackett, the proprietor, was born in Bates County, Missouri, in 1857, and there educated. He has made a life study of this line and is recognized by all as one of our most efficient as well as painstaking horseshoers in this section. He is a member of the K. of P., W. O. W., Ben Hur and is highly esteemed by all. |
